Just like the Fortune 400, they need to ensure that data is backed up, retrievable and secure, and that data access complies with governmental regulations. Unfortunately, if you are a small business owner you also cope with some challenges the big guys don't have, budgets are small and your IT staff, if you even have one, may not have storage-specific expertise. BT Global Services, BT's international business services and solutions division, is upgrading its pan-European optical network with Nortel Networks optical switching equipment.
The upgrades to key hub nodes in Paris and Frankfurt are currently scheduled for completion by mid-2003 and will include one of the first European deployments of the OPTera Connect HDX optical switch.
OPTera Connect HDX is part of Nortel Networks' next-generation Optical Networks portfolio, which allows carriers to boost revenues through the deployment of new optical broadband services that integrate with existing networks.
Nortel Networks has been BT Global Services' supplier in planning, building and operating its pan-European transport network since 1998. The BT Global Services network uses Nortel Networks OPTera portfolio of products, including OPTera Connect DX, OPTera Long Haul 1600 Optical Line System, and OPTera Metro equipment for breakout of low-capacity service at specific points-of-presence. The network is managed centrally from the BT Network Management Centre in Brussels.
OPTera Connect HDX offers a nonblocking, highly scalable solution with 640 gigabits per second switching capacity per shelf, while its integrated dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optics deliver proven savings and integrate with existing dense DWDM installed base.
OPTera Connect HDX enables node consolidation by replacing complex network interconnect points with a next-generation solution that supports multiple protection topologies on a single platform. In addition, OPTera Connect HDX allows customers to simplify circuit provisioning, minimize network costs and generate incremental revenue opportunities by offering new network solutions with tailored service levels.
