Storage Strategies for Small Businesses
November 7, 2006--2 p.m. EST, 11 a.m. PST
When it comes to storage, small and medium businesses have a lot in common with large enterprises. Just like the Fortune 400, they need to ensure that data is backed up, retrievable and secure, and that data access complies with governmental regulations. Unfortunately, if you are a small business owner you also cope with some challenges the big guys don't have, budgets are small and your IT staff, if you even have one, may not have storage-specific expertise. Attend this webcast and learn storage strategies to meet your growing business demands.

Origix Implements Gigabit Ethernet in Minneapolis
April 2, 2003
By Kevin Reichard

Origix has introduced GigaNet metro Ethernet services in Minneapolis. The service, which is the first in Minnesota, gives businesses access to fast and reliable data communications technology.

With speeds of a Gigabit per second (Gbps) and beyond, the firm's new GigaNet service is more than 22 times faster than a DS-3 connection and more than 667 times faster than a T-1 line. At maximum bandwidth, the system can transfer more than a billion bits of data per second.

GigaNet is dynamically scalable, which means it's easy to increase or decrease bandwidth in 1 Megabit per second (Mbps) increments with no service interruption. This eliminates the need for businesses to be locked into fixed amounts of IP bandwidth that can be underutilized.

The new service is currently used by many firms, including the law firm of DOrsey & Whitney. The scalability of GigaNet provides the varying amounts of bandwidth required by Dorsey & Whitney's new document management system. Traditional systems can't provision changes in bandwidth that quickly.

"It is a lot of bandwidth for the money," said Glen Kragness, director of technology for Dorsey. Businesses pay only for the bandwidth used, and Origix's dedicated optical network eliminates expensive local-loop charges.

GigaNet's point-to-point Ethernet delivers connectivity with latency of less than 5 milliseconds. That speed, combined with the virtual local area networks (LANs) and storage area networks (SANs) it creates across metropolitan areas, also makes GigaNet a possible choice for remote data storage and business continuity services.

Origix's GigaNet network is integrated with its Optimized Network Access Point (ONAP) that ensures optimal routing of IP traffic to multiple Internet networks, providing up to 30 percent greater efficiency for Internet access. Origix leverages Sockeye Network's Global Route 3.0 service to optimize the upstream IP traffic. Whether a business uses a quarter Mbps of bandwidth or a gigabit of bandwidth, the IP traffic is optimized.

Route optimization was important to Dorsey & Whitney, Kragness said, because it increases reliability and reduces the firm's need to contract with multiple IP carriers.
