SBC Communications today announced its local service companies have enhanced the features and widened availability of its Multi-Service Optical Networking (MON) solutions to provide businesses with a scalable way to connect mainframes, data centers and storage networks within a metropolitan area. SBC MON solutions are now available to enterprises that need to connect multiple locations within a city using optical ring configurations.
SBC MON enables customers to interconnect client data centers and business sites in a secure metropolitan area network. The services use dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) to enable protocol-independent optical connectivity with bandwidth of up to 160 Gbps per fiber pair. DWDM makes it possible for many data streams to travel over the same pair of fiber by utilizing different colors of the light spectrum.
The enhanced SBC MON services allow businesses to connect multiple locations in a metro area using a ring network configuration. This ring architecture provides the highest available levels of reliability and redundancy, which allows SBC to position it as a solution for those enterprises needing high-speed transmission of any business-critical information, as well as disaster recovery and business continuity applications and mirroring data.
SBC MON has been available since 2001 as a dedicated point-to-point network solution. The new enhanced SBC MON offerings support customer dedicated ring applications with a broader array of interfaces while providing more flexible and scalable configurations. All SBC MON offerings feature rapid bandwidth provisioning, which enables customers to expand their networks quickly and cost-effectively to meet their own dynamic growth requirements.
SBC MON and related equipment offerings are available as a managed service, allowing businesses to reduce in-house capital and management expenses by outsourcing network development and ongoing management to the SBC family of companies. The enhanced MON service offering works in conjunction with a number of data transport protocols, including ESCON, FICON, ETR, ISC, Fibre Channel, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, SONET and D1 video. The transport protocols are delivered in their native format, eliminating the need for a costly translation process to enable cross-platform interoperability.

"The connectivity benefits of DWDM, coupled with the added security of a managed, monitored network in a ring configuration, make this an attractive offer for businesses with multiple locations and advanced networking needs."
The MON offerings are available throughout the SBC 13-state local service territory. Both the SBC MON services utilize the Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5200 5.0 Multi-service Platform release 5.0, a DWDM-based platform enabling the delivery of new services such as business continuity, disaster recovery, video and content networking on a wide-scale basis.
