Canadian Internet networking giant Nortel Networks (Quote) introduced its LC25 series transmitters for general availability. These directly modulated, metro DWDM lasers are the industry's longest reach, lowest cost-per-kilometer optical transmitters across both the C and L bands, officials said.
The series provides "unrivaled capability to extend the reach of metro optical networks to regional metro distances up to 360 kilometers when paired with a laser driver such as Nortel Networks NTMM94AB Directly Modulated Laser Diode Driver," Nortel also said. This single component alternative is a lower cost, smaller package than electro-absorption (EA) based offerings traditionally used.
The series is aimed at both metro and long haul optical network providers looking to deploy cost-competitive transmission solutions. Depending on individual provider needs, the LC25 series has three variations, providing systems designers with greater flexibility in matching the component to specific performance requirements including output power, tunability, and increased wavelength stability, officials said.
The LC25W and the LC25EW are 2.5 Gbps directly modulated lasers available in four power options (from 2mW through to 10mW peak). Both provide up to 360-kilometer reach and cover 80 DWDM channels at 100GHz spacing across the C and L bands. The LC25EW includes an integrated etalon wavelength locker for systems where the channel may require increased wavelength stability.
The third variant in the series is the LC25ET, a tunable 2.5Gbps directly modulated laser aimed at providing cost-competitive tunable optical networks over spans of up to 175 kilometers. Each LC25ET is rapidly tunable over four adjacent 100GHz DWDM channels in the C band and also integrates an etalon wavelength locker for increased stability.
By integrating the wavelength locker into the laser package, the LC25EW and LC25ET offer a more compact device than external locker solutions. No other equivalent transmitter with an integrated wavelength locker is currently available, Nortel added.
