Unfortunately, if you are a small business owner you also cope with some challenges the big guys don't have, budgets are small and your IT staff, if you even have one, may not have storage-specific expertise. City Signal Communications (CSC), a Malvern, Pa.-based developer of metropolitan dark fiber networks in key mid-Atlantic and Midwest markets in the U.S., said it has closed a $17 million third-round equity investment, led by MC Venture Partners and included additional investment by BB&T Capital Partners.
As a result of the equity investment, CSC said it plans to complete construction of its networks in Philadelphia, Cleveland and Columbus, as well as further expand its staff. The company will also use the funds for general corporate use.
Already, CSC has networks completed in Richmond and Norfolk, Va.; and Wilmington and Newark, Del.
CSC President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) John Foley said, "Closing this third round of funding in the current difficult economic environment was a critical step in moving the business forward. This equity investment provides the opportunity to dramatically expand our business and expedite the rollout of our dark-fiber networks."
As a result of this round of financing, Gillis Cashman, Associate of MC Venture Partners, has joined James Wade, Managing Partner of MC Venture Partners on CSC's Board of Directors.
CSC's multi-ring networks allow carriers access to a number of highly desirable, yet underserved, metropolitan areas already experiencing explosive commercial and residential growth. The company said its strategy is to push the edge of its networks "deep into the Tier 2 and Tier 1 suburban landscape."
CSC's customers include CLECs, ILECs, ISPs, wireless carriers and next-generation providers that use xDSL and Gigabit Ethernet platforms.
