RCN, Starpower Go Hollywood
February 26, 2002
By Roy Mark
RCN Corp. (Quote) and Starpower Communications, LLC, the joint venture between RCN and Washington, D.C.-based Pepco Communications, have signed a five-year, multimillion dollar agreement with Qmedia, Inc. to provide fiber rings in New York City and Washington. Exact terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Utilizing a portion of RCN's high capacity fiber-optic network, each ring will connect six locations to Qmedia's hub site in each city and provide connectivity to Qmedia's national fiber optic network, which is being built for broadcasters, producers, media distributors and other media-centric companies. Installation of the city rings is expected to be complete by June.
The New York City-based Qmedia is building a network to allow superior transport of uncompressed video, streaming video, graphics, video over Ethernet and other services for the media industry. Discussions are underway between RCN and Qmedia for expanding the scope of the current relationship.
"Our agreement with Qmedia is part of RCN's commercial operations strategy to leverage the technology and spare capacity of our high-speed, fiber-optic network," said Tim Wyllie, senior vice president for the Princeton, N.J.-based RCN's Commercial Operations. "RCN built its residential network with excess capacity so we could capitalize on these very types of new applications and revenue-generating opportunities."
RCN has more than 1 million customer connections, and it operates in seven of the top ten markets in the U.S. including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington.
"Our agreement with RCN will enable Qmedia to connect key clients in New York and Washington, D.C., to the world's most advanced fiber-optic network dedicated to video, graphics and sound," said Russ Hamm, founder of Qmedia. "With RCN's help, the Qmedia network will permit the media industry to leave behind film reels, video tapes and CD masters, and take full advantage of the speed and flexibility of fiber for the delivery of digital content."
Starpower is a joint venture between RCN and Pepco Communications, L.L.C., a wholly owned but separate affiliate of Potomac Electric Power Company (Quote). Starpower's fiber optic network will serve Washington, Northern Virginia and major portions of Maryland.
