Derry, N.H.-based Cedar Point Communications has raised $19 million in new financing to develop technology that
lets cable companies offer phone service.
Massachusetts investors, Charles River Ventures and Battery Ventures, of Watham and Wellesley, respectively, led the round. Previously, Cedar Point was funded
by its founders and Ascent Venture Partners.
"Cable operators have pointed to cost and complexity as the two primary impediments to a nationwide rollout of telephony services," said Bruce Sachs, of
Charles River Ventures. "Cedar Point has created the first solution that addresses those concerns, both in terms of initial implementation and ongoing operations."
Cedar Point's "cable media switching" technology combines attributes of Class 5 voice switches with the elements in distributed voice over Internet protocol
networks in a single system.
The technology began lab trials with Comcast Corporation in November.
The privately held company recently added cable industry expertise with the appointment of Tom Jokerst, president of Charter Communications, to
its advisory board.
