When it comes to storage, small and medium businesses have a lot in common with large enterprises. Just like the Fortune 400, they need to ensure that data is backed up, retrievable and secure, and that data access complies with governmental regulations. Unfortunately, if you are a small business owner you also cope with some challenges the big guys don't have, budgets are small and your IT staff, if you even have one, may not have storage-specific expertise. Attend this webcast and learn storage strategies to meet your growing business demands. Register Now >
JDS Uniphase Corp. (Quote) announced four new OA Series Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs) for fiber-optic communication systems providers, making it what the company calls the broadest offering of standard optical amplifiers available.
The OA Series offers an alternative to the costly and lengthy design and manufacture associated with traditional, custom-built EDFAs, allowing JDS Uniphase to provide high-performance EDFAs more quickly, more cost-effectively, and to a wider range of customers, officials also said.
By providing standard designs, JDS Uniphase and its customers can eliminate NRE (non-recurring engineering) costs and reduce delivery times to 1-8 weeks as compared to the 12-36 weeks that is typical for custom-built EDFAs.
With the OA Series, JDS Uniphase can offer high-performance EDFAs to small- and medium-sized system providers without requiring the resources needed for custom development. Large system providers can improve their time-to-market by using OA Series EDFAs during their prototype cycles prior to developing custom amplifiers or they can eliminate custom development by specifying the OA Series for their production systems.
EDFAs are a key technology in enabling Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) optical systems and reducing network costs, JDS Uniphase also said. They can amplify signals on multiple channels simultaneously, extending reach distances to over 800 kilometers, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for costly regeneration equipment.
