November 7, 2006--2 p.m. EST, 11 a.m. PST
When it comes to storage, small and medium businesses have a lot in common with large enterprises. Just like the Fortune 400, they need to ensure that data is backed up, retrievable and secure, and that data access complies with governmental regulations. Unfortunately, if you are a small business owner you also cope with some challenges the big guys don't have, budgets are small and your IT staff, if you even have one, may not have storage-specific expertise. Equipe Gains Patent
February 12, 2002
By Optically Networked Staff

Equipe Communications Corp., an Acton, Mass.-based broadband product provider, said it has been granted a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for its Equipe 3200 (E3200) platform.

The patent details how the E3200, Equipe's flagship product, supports multiple network redundancy schemes in a single platform to improve carrier network availability, lower operational expenses and provide 1:N redundancy, company officials said.

This is the company's first patent, and it has applied for 74 patents to date, officials also said.

The E3200 platform is the first purpose-built Asynchronous Transfer Mode/Multiprotocol Label Switching (ATM/MPLS) core data switch with an integrated SONET/SDH cross-connect. This design provides Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers (ILEC) and InterExchange Carriers (IXC) maximum flexibility when selecting redundancy schemes for network devices.

The E3200's now-patented technology supports multiple combinations of redundancy schemes in one platform lowering a carrier's capital expenditures along with the operational costs associated with 1:1 parallel redundancy architectures. In addition, bandwidth and processing power previously reserved in case of a network outage can be re-deployed for revenue generating services with no loss of availability.

The E3200's SONET/SDH cross-connect, located between the physical cards and the processor cards, acts as a "traffic cop" allowing carriers the flexibility to deploy multiple redundancy schemes. The E3200 can support 1:1, 1+1 and 1:N for physical cards or ports and 1:N redundancy for processor cards. This unique design contrasts with traditional, static and more costly redundancy schemes found in Layer 2 switches that directly connect each physical card to a corresponding processor thus limiting redundancy schemes and adding costs.
