Internet networking giant Alcatel (Quote) said that Niel Ransom has been appointed chief technology officer (CTO) of Alcatel, replacing Martin De Prycker, who has "decided to pursue new opportunities outside of Alcatel," officials said.
In his new position, Ransom will report to Alcatel's Executive Committee. He will be responsible for the company's technology choices, the network strategy and the maximization of Alcatel's intellectual property. In charge of the corporate research program, his mission will be to guide the development of all in-house or acquired technologies from the start-up phase to a mature business, Alcatel said in a statement.
Ransom has been vice president and chief technology officer of Alcatel Americas since June 2000. He joined Alcatel in 1997 as general manager of the local networks business unit. Before that, Mr. Ransom worked for BellSouth as senior director of advanced technology. Prior to BellSouth, he managed various development and applied research groups at AT&T Bell Labs.
De Prycker joined Alcatel in 1982, which at the time was ITT. Prior to becoming CTO in 2000, De Prycker was president of Alcatel's Carrier Data Division, and he held various key positions in Alcatel's research center in Antwerp, Belgium, until he became vice president of the Access Division in 1996.
