Sorrento, Deutsche Telekom Agree on Pact
February 5, 2002
By Bob Woods
Sorrento Networks (Quote), a supplier of end-to-end, intelligent optical networking solutions for metro and regional applications, said it has entered into an agreement with incumbent telecommunications carrier German Deutsche Telekom AG (Quote). Terms of the pact call for all subsidiaries and affiliates of Deutsche Telekom to have access to Sorrento's family of optical transport, access and network management products.
Financial details behind the pact were not released.
To date, Deutsche Telekom has deployed San Diego-based Sorrento Networks' optical solution in the metro networks of many of its largest customers in Germany, as well as in its internal data network, officials said.
Deutsche Telekom says it is Europe's largest telecommunications company, with 41 million residential customers and approximately 350,000 small- to medium-sized businesses served by its T-Com Group. Since 1990, Deutsche Telekom has invested approximately 80 billion euros in its German infrastructure. With more than 18 million channels in Germany, Deutsche Telekom is the global leader in ISDN.
The fully digitized T-Net in Germany is being linked ever more closely with the company's T-GlobeNet, which is undergoing continuous expansion around the world. Once completed, it will cover 150,000 kilometers and link approximately 90 key locations in 40 countries using Deutsche Telekom-owned optical fiber routes.
Sorrento Networks' optical transport solution, GigaMux, helps carriers and enterprises achieve a lower cost of network ownership, company officials said. With GigaMux, network operators can offer a variety of services up to 10 Gbps per wavelength, scaling from four to 64 wavelengths per fiber (producing a maximum throughput of 1.28 Tbps per fiber pair) without service interruption.
Sorrento's EPC sub-rate multiplexing products further help operators slash their cost of ownership by allowing every wavelength to be packed to full capacity before transport. TeraManager, the company's carrier-class network management platform, enables service providers to significantly decrease operational costs and the turnaround times associated with service provisioning and network administration.
