Memphis Networx, a metro carrier's carrier, said it plans to offer high-speed data services typically found in large metropolitan areas to businesses in Memphis and Shelby County using an enhanced network based on optical metro solutions from Nortel Networks (Quote).
Under an agreement announced today, Nortel Networks will supply Memphis Networx with solutions from Nortel Networks OPTera Metro portfolio. By standardizing on OPTera Metro throughout its network, Memphis Networx expects to benefit from efficiencies in training, maintenance, upgrades and service to save time and reduce overall network costs, officials said.
Memphis Networx is a public-private initiative, and is installing its entire network on existing utility infrastructure and right-of-way in Memphis and Shelby County to minimize cost and environmental impact. The first phase of the network is scheduled to be completed by June 2002.
Nortel said it is providing Memphis Networx with products from its DWM/SONET portfolio, including its OPTera Metro 3400 and 3500 Multiservice Platforms, and OPTera Metro 5200, a DWDM platform for metropolitan access and interoffice applications. Memphis Networx already has Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5200 installed in parts of its network.
