Cisco Systems Inc. (Quote) said it has made sales to two Chinese firms building out their networks in their native country.
First, Cisco said its next-generation 12000 series Internet routers have been selected by Hangzhou as the backbone equipment to build what is being called China's largest broadband Metropolitan-Area Network (MAN). DPT will enable Hangzhou to dramatically enhance the performance and efficiencies of its network while reducing its operational costs, the networker said.
Hangzhou Netcom Information Harbor, a telecom operator and the first Internet Service Provider (ISP) in China to supply Ethernet to homes with full metro coverage, will build the MAN. The sale of this equipment reinforces Cisco's position as the leading provider of Internet and networking equipment in China, officials said. When completed, the network will support an estimated 1.5 million users.
Located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, the MAN will be powered by a host of high-speed, high performance Cisco products, including market-leading Cisco 12008, 12012 and 12016 Internet Routers with DPT connections, enabling the MAN with the intelligence and scalability of IP and the bandwidth efficiencies of optical rings. In addition to its next generation Cisco 12000 Series Internet Routers, the MAN is also supported by Cisco 7200 Series Routers, Catalyst 6500 Series and 2900 family of switches, and Cisco Content Engine 7300 Series edge delivery devices from Cisco's content networking product family.
Cisco also said its ONS 15801 Long-Haul DWDM Systems are being used by China Telecom over its ChinaNet backbone network between Shanghai and Hangzhou. China Telecom used the equipment to successfully launch what is called China's first 10 Gbps long-haul system.
Combining the Cisco ONS 15801 with Cisco 12400 series Internet Routers, China Telecom has significantly enhanced its IP+Optical network and further advanced the capacity of China's Internet backbone, Cisco said. ChinaNet's infrastructure is China's first IP+Optical backbone network based on 10 Gbps dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) transmission, the Canadian networking concern also said.
With the addition of the ONS 15801 to its backbone network, China Telecom is benefiting from Cisco's extensive experience in equipment manufacture for 10 Gbps long-haul DWDM transmission as well as high speed Internet routing, allowing ChinaNet to transport IP packets directly over DWDM. This bypasses the SDH layer reducing capital expenditures, operating costs and network complexity. Utilizing a complete 10 Gbps IP+Optical solution from Cisco also enabled ChinaNet to achieve greater cost and deployment efficiencies, Cisco added.
