Umass Lowell's Online Learning program is now offering a new graduate certificate in Photonics and Optoelectronics -- and you don't even have to show up in a classroom to earn one.
UMass Lowell Online Learning, which claims to be the largest online course provider in New England, allows students to earn a degree or certificate from their home or office computers at their convenience using the Web, e-mail, online chat and other Internet-based resources.
The Photonics and Optoelectronics Graduate Certificate provides a fundamental overview of electro-optics and fiber optics in data rates and the opportunity to specialize in fiber optics, medical optics, device physics, and remote sensing/image processing, college officials said.
Four courses compose the graduate certificate. One required course, "Electro-optics and Fiber Optics," is being offered this semester. Three electives, including "Fiber Optic Communications and Networks," is also being offered this semester.
Two undergraduate courses offered this spring, "Introduction to Fiber Optics" and "Introduction to Optical Systems," can be applied to the undergraduate certificate program, which also available online.
Classes start January 23rd, but students can register through February 1st and pay no late fees.
UMass Lowell Online Learning, part of the Division of Continuing Studies, Corporate and Distance Education, offers more than 90 courses each semester in a wide variety of disciplines. Complete degree programs in Educational Administration, Information Technology, and Liberal Arts, as well as nine certificates, can be earned online.
