Canoga Perkins, a Chatsworth, Calif.-based supplier of fiber optic extension equipment and WDM systems, said BellSouth (Quote) has deployed Gigabit Ethernet service using Canoga Perkins components.
BellSouth is using Canoga Perkins' fiber optic Gigabit Ethernet LAN extension and customer premises equipment to enable the company's enhanced high-speed LAN service, officials said.
BellSouth recently launched Gigabit Ethernet service using Canoga Perkins 9120 and 9135G fiber optic Gigabit Ethernet products. The Canoga Perkins 9120 Gigabit Ethernet Xtender can drive data 90 kilometers on a single mode fiber optic cable at Gigabit speeds and is used in BellSouth's central offices for enabling the company's Gigabit Ethernet service. The 9135G is an intelligent fiber optic Gigabit Ethernet edge device, used at the customer premises to terminate Gigabit Ethernet service. This device fully supports in-band SNMP network management and out-of-band management for VT100 and SLIP via individual terminal and modem ports.
BellSouth's Metro Ethernet services provide customers with a clear migration path to the next generation of data networking while maintaining the Ethernet protocol, which has become the LAN standard protocol. Customers may choose a point-to-point connection or a switched connection where several locations may interconnect and interoperate at any speed available from 1.5 Mbps to 1 Gbps.
Both point-to-point and switched connection customers benefit from 24X7 service management and monitoring by BellSouth. BellSouth's Metro Ethernet services are available throughout the company's nine-state region. The services are offered with Gigabit speed in the Atlanta, Miami, Charlotte and Raleigh markets.
