Telia International Carrier Inc., a provider of global IP, capacity and voice services to the rapidly growing wholesale network services market, today announced the completion of the North American segment of its wholly owned international fiber network using optical networking equipment from Lucent Technologies (Quote).
The U.S. Viking Network links 27 major cities in the U.S. and solidifies Telia's position as a global player in the telecom wholesale market, company officials said. Telia's U.S. Viking Network enables the company to offer customers a continuously upgradeable network, ensuring the company can meet demands for IP-connectivity, capacity, voice and other bandwidth-intensive applications.
The U.S. portion of the network is equipped with the Lucent WaveStar OLS 400G, a dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) system that provides a capacity of up to 400 gigabits per second (Gbps), equivalent to transmitting 12,000 encyclopedia volumes per second. Telia and Lucent first announced their collaboration in May 2000.
"With our European and U.S. networks now in place, Telia International Carrier offers customers one of the largest international fiber optic networks in the world," said David Hess, President and CEO, Telia International Carrier, North America.
Telia also has completed the installation of the TAT-14 Atlantic cable, a transatlantic cable that connects the European and North American segments of Telia's global network.
Lucent also said it provides Telia end-to end network integration and consulting services using Lucent Worldwide Services portfolio, including planning, installation, integration and network management services.
