JDS Uniphase Corp. (Quote) today announced a family of temperature tunable, directly modulated lasers (DML) and added to its fixed wavelength product line, making it the broadest DML offering in the industry for 2.5 Gbps systems, officials said.
The low cost of DMLs make them key products for the Metro and Access market segments in fiber-optic communications, JDSU also said.
With its CQF413 Series for 2.5 Gbps systems, JDS Uniphase is among the first to introduce temperature tunable DMLs. These products are two-channel tunable for the 100 GHz ITU and are available in both 100 km and extended reach 180 km versions and for both low (2.5 mW) and high (10 mW) peak output power levels.
JDS Uniphase also introduced the CQF915/508, a low power (2.5 mW), extended reach (180 km), fixed wavelength DML for 2.5 Gbps systems. With this product, the CQF 915 Series now includes models for both low and high power, and for both standard and extended reach applications, JDSU also said.
DMLs meet performance requirements for span lengths typical of the metro and access markets. Other laser sources, such as continuous wave (CW) lasers with external modulators or electro-absorption modulated lasers (EMLs) are well-suited for much longer spans but are more expensive for metro and access applications.
The DMLs in the CQF 413 and CQF 915 are available for order, with standard lead-time at approximately 3-4 weeks after receipt of order.
