Grand Rapids, Mich.-based US Signal, previously known as RVP Fiber, said it has significantly expanded its fiber-optic network in the key Midwest tier-one markets of Chicago, Milwaukee and Indianapolis.
The fiber optics solutions provider said it has acquired an additional 185 metro route miles of fiber that includes 24 central offices (local telephone switching centers) in the three Midwest markets. With the addition of these assets, US Signal's network now includes 100 central offices, nearly 700 route miles of metro rings around 14 high-growth tier one, two and three markets, and nearly 2,000 route miles of long-haul fiber connecting the metro rings.
US Signal also claimed that its network was the "largest in the Midwest."
The expansion will also provide US Signal with direct access to major carrier hotels in Chicago, including 600 South Federal, as well as to SBC's Chicago Network Access Point (NAP). The SBC NAP is the premier Internet exchange in the Midwest and one of the top Internet exchanges in the world, measured by both number of customers and traffic load, US Signal said.
This acquisition follows the announcement last month that US Signal will use Cisco's metro and metro edge optical transport platforms to light its network.
US Signal offers unlimited high-speed capacity, dark fiber and collocation services, and also works with customers to design, and build new network construction projects.
