Cox Uses Cisco for National IP Backbone
January 7, 2002
By Optically Networked Staff

Internet networking giant Cisco Systems Inc. (Quote) said that Cox Communications is using its Internet routers and switches in the cable company's new national Internet protocol (IP) network.

The routers -- Cisco 12400 and 7600 series -- and the switches -- Cisco's Catalyst 6500 series -- will be used to satisfy the "rapidly increasing demand from (Cox's) greater than three-quarters of a million customers for high-value IP services such as content delivery, and Virtual Private Networks (VPN)," Cisco said in a statement.

In addition, Cox has selected the ONS 15454 Metro Optical Transport Platform at many of its interconnection sites to enable maximum service density of voice and data services.

Cisco's next generation Internet routers, the full series of Cisco 7300, 7400, 7600, 10000, 10700 and the 12000, are a family of multimillion packets-per-second (pps) IP platforms for creating service-enabled Internets, Cisco said.
