According to research released this week by the Dell'Oro Group, worldwide sales of optical transport equipment reached $2.3 billion in the second quarter of 2006.
The Redwood City, Calif.-based reaeach firm, which specializes in networking and telecommunications industries, said the market recorded the highest quarterly results since the fourth quarter of 2001 based primarily on strong WDM sales.
According to Dell'Oro, worldwide sales for WDM equipment grew 35 percent in the second quarter year-over-year with the majority of the growth coming from North America and the EMEA regions.
"The explosion of video content on the Internet and the emergence of IPTV services are pushing the limits of traditional optical networking technology," said Shin Umeda, principal analyst for optical transport research at Dell'Oro Group, in a statement.
Umeda went to to say that he believes WDM systems will offer the capacity and scalability that telecom service providers and cable operators need to handle the traffic growth on their networks.
The Dell'Oro Group Optical Transport Quarterly Report covers manufacturers' revenue, average selling prices, and unit shipments, Tributary/Line or Wavelength shipments. The report tracks DWDM long haul terrestrial, WDM metro, SONET/SDH ADM, SONET/SDH Multiservice,and optical switch equipment.
