HP Deploys Cisco's Optical and SAN Technology
February 23, 2005
By OpticallyNetworked Staff

From wire service reports

Cisco Systems announced today that its optical transport and storage area network (SAN) technology solutions are being deployed to help improve the management and resilience of HP's business and mission-critical data throughout the company's European operation.

Cisco said its goal is to enable HP to offer a highly resilient and robust data management service to new and existing customers based on the new optical and SAN infrastructure. HP Services is using the Cisco equipment to link its two European data centers -- which are 84kms apart -- at Grenoble and Isle d'Abeau in France. This has created a highly resilient network infrastructure supporting more than 41 terabytes of data and distributed applications running across more than 250 HP ProLiant servers. According to HP, the overall solution is five times more cost-effective than extending the storage capacity of existing data centers.

"The Cisco optical networking and SAN solution is one of the first of its kind to be deployed in HP and it demonstrates how organizations can use networking technology to optimize existing resources and protect investments, whilst improving performance and reducing operating costs," said Marcus Chambers, director of operations, storage & optical business, Cisco Systems EMEA.

Cisco and HP collaborate in developing and delivering integrated solutions designed to help customers implement intelligent building, IP Communications (IP Telephony and IP Contact Center), network management, network services and support, mobility and wireless, and network storage.

At its two European data centers, HP deployed the Cisco ONS 15540 dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical transport platform to provide the high-capacity link between the data centers with Cisco Catalyst(R) 6509 switches and Cisco MDS 9509 Multilayer SAN Directors. This helps maximize network uptime at both data centers.

"As part of its pan-European data center consolidation effort, HP determined that expanding capacity in France and networking two data centers was a better proposition than physically expanding one of the data centers," said Patrick de Marcillac, European infrastructure manager, HP. "Thanks to this solution developed with Cisco, we now have an infrastructure that will enable us to offer more data management services to our customers. Through the strong synergy of the HP Adaptive Enterprise strategy and Cisco's Intelligent Information Network vision, HP and Cisco are creating and growing new markets while we continue to deliver the best 'total customer experience.'"

HP is Cisco's only Global Certified Gold Partner and is an Advanced Technology Programme (ATP) partner for Optical solutions in EMEA. .
