Unfortunately, if you are a small business owner you also cope with some challenges the big guys don't have, budgets are small and your IT staff, if you even have one, may not have storage-specific expertise. Attend this webcast and learn storage strategies to meet your growing business demands.

Juniper Braces China Telecom's Backbone
November 16, 2004
By Colin C. Haley

Juniper (Quote) is making more headway with its Asian-Pacific contracts.

Routers from the Sunnyvale, Calif., company will power China Telecom's national core network and eight small interconnecting systems, officials said Tuesday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The platforms will provide Multi-protocol Label Switching (define) in the network infrastructure, enabling China's largest carrier to offer advanced services including virtual private networking (define), IP voice and video streaming.

Equipment from Cisco (Quote) will also play a prominent role in the new network, which is sometimes referred to as CN2. Other companies expected to get a piece of the CN2 project include Paris-based Alcatel.

A Juniper spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

In a statement, Jim Dolce, Juniper's executive vice president of worldwide field operations, said, "We're proud to have been selected as the sole IP router vendor for China Telecom's CN2 national core and South China provincial backbone network."

Juniper and other telecom equipment firms have been ramping up investments in China in recent years for two reasons: it's an attractive manufacturing and distribution hub; and the nation's relative lack of infrastructure means the market has plenty of upside.

Other service providers in China have previously tapped Juniper for major projects. For example, China Cable Network Company uses Juniper's M-series routers in its nationwide network.
