Storage Strategies for Small Businesses
November 7, 2006--2 p.m. EST, 11 a.m. PST
When it comes to storage, small and medium businesses have a lot in common with large enterprises. Just like the Fortune 400, they need to ensure that data is backed up, retrievable and secure, and that data access complies with governmental regulations. Unfortunately, if you are a small business owner you also cope with some challenges the big guys don't have, budgets are small and your IT staff, if you even have one, may not have storage-specific expertise. Attend this webcast and learn storage strategies to meet your growing business demands.

Passave Unveils New System-on-Chip for FTTH
September 27, 2004
From Wire Services
SANTA CLARA, Calif. Passave Inc., the leading provider of semiconductors for Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) systems, today introduced the most highly integrated chip for Ethernet passive optical networking (EPON). The PAS6201 optical networking unit (ONU) is a third-generation EPON-based system-on-chip (SoC) optimized for low-cost, high-bandwidth customer-premise installations on FTTH networks. Breaking new ground in integration, the PAS6201 incorporates a CPU, MAC (media access controller), SERDES (serializer/deserializer), Layer-2+ switch and packet buffer on a single chip — surpassing the integration of any currently available or announced broadband-over-fiber solution for FTTH networks.

The PAS6201 advances the state of the art in optical networking by serving as the enabling component for low-cost residential gateways that deliver services such as high-definition television (HDTV), voice over IP (VoIP), interactive gaming and other high-bandwidth services over a single connection. For carriers and service providers, the low-cost, highly integrated PAS6201 means significant reductions in the bill of materials (BOM) for customer-premise PON equipment, and in the cost to consumers for delivering these residential services.

"The PAS6201 is an ideal enabling device for low-cost optical network termination at the customer's premises," said Ariel Maislos, president of Passave. "Through superior integration and the incorporation of a CPU, SERDES and Layer 2+ switch, this third-generation device can provide a significant reduction in the BOM for a complete FTTH EPON solution. In doing so, it accelerates the already widespread consumer acceptance of Gigabit Ethernet over fiber for broadband access."

The PAS6201 is the only third-generation EPON chip available, entering a market in which first-generation competitive solutions have just been announced or are yet to undergo initial customer trials. By contrast, the PAS6201's predecessors, the PAS6001 and PAS6001-N, have been adopted by more than 20 global networking OEMs for PON systems currently in mass deployment, and have shipped in hundreds of thousands.

"iSuppli has projected the growth in the EPON market will exceed 33% per year for the next several years. To achieve this level of growth, it is imperative that the ONUs support multiple services, are self provisioned and priced under $70. Component integration, open source platform and design for self-provisioning are required to meet this challenge," said Steve Rago, principal analyst, networking and optical communications, iSuppli Corporation, an international market research and consulting firm.

A hallmark of the PAS6201 is an advanced packet-classification engine that makes auto-provisioning of network resources a reality. Leveraging Passave's extensive experience in large-scale field deployment of EPON, the PAS6201 promises to simplify the network and make it manageable, while making it easy for carriers to provision new services for customers.

The PAS6201 is shipped with a complete, modular FTTH software stack based on an open-source Linux platform, reducing cost and time-to-market for system developers, while enabling them to add functionality and differentiate their products.

The PAS6201 addresses a market driven by bandwidth-hungry consumers who are looking beyond the limits of existing copper-based and cable-based solutions. "The accelerating advancements in EPON are driving field-proven FTTH to a price curve more aggressive than that of DSL and cable modems," continued Maislos.

Like its predecessor, the PAS6201 fully conforms to the recently ratified IEEE 802.3ah standard for Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM). Passave also provides a central-office (CO) chip, the PAS5001, which works in tandem with the PAS6201, making Passave the leading supplier of end-to-end EPON solutions for FTTH networks.

The PAS6201 will sample in the fourth quarter of 2004 and will ship in production quantities in the first quarter of 2005. For more information on the PAS6201, contact Passave at 408-375-8790 or go to www.passave.com.
