Just like the Fortune 400, they need to ensure that data is backed up, retrievable and secure, and that data access complies with governmental regulations. Unfortunately, if you are a small business owner you also cope with some challenges the big guys don't have, budgets are small and your IT staff, if you even have one, may not have storage-specific expertise. Lucent's Latin Move
September 9, 2004
By Colin C. Haley

As North American and European markets mature, telecom equipment makers have turned to Asia-Pacific, but there's another region that shouldn't be overlooked.

Carriers and ISPs throughout Latin America are expanding and upgrading their networks as demand grows and competition increases.

The latest beneficiary of the trend is Lucent Technologies (Quote), which today announced hardware, software and service contracts in two countries.

"Our customers in Latin America are relying on our advanced technology and services to upgrade their networks and deploy new revenue-generating services," Victor Agnellini, president of Lucent Technologies in the Caribbean and Latin American region, said in a statement.

The company recently installed 80,000 ADSL (define) access ports for Telefonica de Argentina, a subsidiary of the Spanish telecom giant.

Lucent's ADSL Stinger FS+ ports will help the carrier provide high-speed Internet access to business and residential customers, as well as new services like Voice over IP (define) in the future.

It's the second time Telefonica de Argentina has tapped Lucent to boost its broadband reach. Previously, the gear maker installed 20,000 ADSL ports.

And in Mexico, Maxcom Telecomunicaciones hired Lucent to increase the network's ability to deliver IP services.

Lucent will supply switch software that will increase capacity and allow Maxcom to expand its services portfolio to include VoIP and virtual private networks (define) for corporations and consumers.

The Maxcom order comes a month after Lucent signed a deal with another Mexican service provider, Alestra, for optical networking products and services.

Financial terms of today's deals were not disclosed.

Lucent competes against Alcatel (Quote), Cisco Systems , Nortel (Quote) and others in the space.
