Canoga Perkins Introduces Fiber Optic Modem
August 13, 2003
By OpticallyNetworked Staff

Canoga Perkins, a Chatsworth, Calif.-based company that supplies optical networking products for long distance fiber optic extension and coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) systems, yesterday announced the 2346 E-3 Fiber Optic Modem.

Canoga Perkins describes the modem as "modular with hot swap capability" and reports that it "provides reliable long distance extension of T-3/DS-3 signals operating at 44.736 Mbps."

According to the company, the 2346 can be used with single mode or multimode fiber optic cable and is ideal for extending PBX tie lines, router connects and DS-3 multiplexer links.

The engineering of the 2346 T-3 Fiber Optic Modem is designed to allow it to retime and reshape the DS-3 signal to provide the cleanest and most stable signal possible. Canoga Perkins reports that distance extension of 100 km is possible over a fiber optic single mode cable pair, and distance extension of 40 km is possible over a single strand of single mode fiber. Multimode optics are available on the 2346 T-3 Fiber Optic Modem for multimode applications.

The company reports that management was a top consideration when designing the 2346. Sideband Management, in-band SNMP management, Telnet and SLIP/PPP are provided as standard management features to provide control. To make configuration and control as easy for the user, Canoga Perkins includes a menu-driven user interface. CanogaView provides real-time software LED display, continual link status monitoring, configuration support, inventory management and diagnostics control of the module. The company claims that remote management of the far end T-3 Fiber Optic Modem behaves just as if you were local to the module thanks to the advanced management capabilities of Sideband Management.

To aid in quickly troubleshooting, the modem is equipped with local and remote loopbacks and front panel LED status indicators for quick visual reference. Remote Power Outage Detection and Reporting is provided if the 1020/1030e standalone enclosure is used to house the 9126 Technology Module. "We were proud to bring the 2346 to market quickly, as its first deployment was as a classified part of the war in Iraq," Jack Buhn, Canoga Perkins president and CEO, said. More OpticallyNetworked news.
