US Signal Deploys SONET Switching and Transport System
November 7, 2002
US Signal today announced it has provisioned its first client on the Metro-OptiX City Stream metro optical cross-connect equipment.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
US Signal, a Grand Rapids, Mich.-based fiber-optics solutions provider, is utilizing Metro-Optix's CityStream 5000 bandwidth manager for metro edge optical cross connect to enhance its network performance.
The US Signal network, the largest in the Midwest, is comprised of 500 miles of fiber optic metro rings around 14 high-growth cities and 2,000 route miles of long-haul fiber connecting first-, second- and third-tier markets in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. The Michigan network was lit last spring, and US Signal plans to have the entire network lit by the end of the year.
"The Metro-OptiX City Stream 5000 provides an immediate economical solution to our cross-connect requirements in our network today and gives us the flexibility to rollout additional services such as ATM, and DSLAM Aggregation with future functionality of IP Routing and Ethernet Services should the need arise," said Barry Raterink, president of US Signal, in a prepared statement.
US Signal has deployed the Metro-OptiX CityStream 5000, a next generation multi-protocol SONET switching and transport system, throughout its network. Metro-OptiX products serve metropolitan access and transport networks for carrier, service provider, and enterprise applications. The CityStream 5000 can provide optical networking, ADM, DCS, ATM SAM, ATM edge switch and future IP router functionality with the ability to efficiently partition bandwidth between TDM, ATM and IP. It also supports interfaces at rates of DS3 to OC-192 with a backplane that's been tested to support OC-768.
Among CityStream's many applications are ring aggregation, mesh topology, point-of-presence bandwidth management, high density STS and VT level grooming and transmultiplexing, service access multiplexing, DSLAM aggregation, ATM edge switching and IP routing.
