Storage Strategies for Small Businesses
November 7, 2006--2 p.m. EST, 11 a.m. PST
When it comes to storage, small and medium businesses have a lot in common with large enterprises. Just like the Fortune 400, they need to ensure that data is backed up, retrievable and secure, and that data access complies with governmental regulations. Unfortunately, if you are a small business owner you also cope with some challenges the big guys don't have, budgets are small and your IT staff, if you even have one, may not have storage-specific expertise. Attend this webcast and learn storage strategies to meet your growing business demands.

JDS Uniphase Revises Guidance
Optical networker JDS Uniphase revised downward its outlook for the current quarter. The company anticipates net sales for the first quarter ending September 30, 2002 will be $190 to $200 million as compared to earlier guidance of $200 to $210 million. The anticipated revenue decline is due to continuing weakness in the company's telecommunications markets.

JDS Uniphase did keep its pro-forma net loss expectations at $0.06 to $0.08 per share, excluding charges under a Global Realignment Program. Also consistent with earlier guidance, the company anticipates that contract cancellation revenue included in the above sales guidance will be $10 to $20 million for the quarter.

CubeOptics Gains $9.8M
VentureWire reported that CubeOptics, which has developed an assembly and manufacturing platform that enables mass manufacturing of low-cost and miniaturized components for data and telecom networks, has raised EUR 10 million ($9.8 million) in Series B funding. CubeOptics is headquartered in Mainz, Germany.

SpectraSwitch Raises $7.5M
SpectraSwitch Inc., a manufacturer of integrated optical components, said it has secured third round venture capital funding of $7.5 million from original investment partners Advanced Technology Ventures and NIF Ventures.

Last March, SpectraSwitch launched the WaveWalker product family of integrated optical components (IOCs) to complement the initial product offering of optical switches and Variable Optical Attenuators (VOAs). WaveWalker products will span the full line of all-optical components for telecommunications networks, including optical switches, attenuators, couplers, agile OADMs, and wavelength selection devices.

PMC-Sierra Intros New Framer
PMC-Sierra has introduced the PM5332 SPECTRA 1x2488, the communications IC industry's highest density, multi-rate SONET/SDH framer for single-channel OC-48/STM-16 or four port channelized OC-12/STM-4 interfaces, officials said.

The SPECTRA 1x2488 is the first fully STS-1/AU-3 channelized framer with integrated multi-rate clock and data recovery (CDR) and synthesis, replacing up to 5 discrete devices. The highly-integrated, small footprint device enables networking original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to easily and efficiently upgrade existing line cards to handle multiple transport operating modes while reducing system cost, complexity, board space, and power. The SPECTRA 1x2488 device is ideal for Multiservice Provisioning Platforms (MSPPs), Add/Drop Multiplexers (ADMs) and Core Routers and Switches for both Metro and Access Networks.

The SPECTRA 1x2488 uses the industry standard TelecomBus interface which provides seamless interfacing with a wide variety of PMC-Sierra's standard products, as well as customer FPGAs and ASICs.

The PM5332 SPECTRA 1x2488 is a 3.5W, 1.8V CMOS device packaged in 31 mm by 31 mm 500-pin UBGA package. The device is priced at $350 in 10K quantities with samples available in Q3, 2002.

Finisar Delivers First XFP 10Gb/s Optical Transceivers
Finisar Corp., which provides gigabit fiber optic solutions for high-speed data and telecommunication networks, said it has made its first customer delivery of XFP 10Gb/s optical transceivers. These first XFP transceivers use a 1310nm DFB laser, and comply with 10km 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GBASE-LR per IEEE 802.3ae) and SONET OC-192 SR-1. XFP transceivers feature a serial 10Gb/s electrical interface called XFI, which removes the need to place electrical mux/demux chips inside the module. This results in significant space, power and cost savings for datacom and telecom system manufacturers.

The XFP is an application-agnostic ultra-small 10Gb/s optical transceiver module being standardized by the XFP MSA Group. Its small footprint and low power dissipation enables the highest board density applications in the industry, officials said.

Sonera Picks Cisco
Cisco Systems said that Sonera, Finland's leading provider of mobile and telecommunications services, is deploying a combination of Cisco Catalyst 2950 switches and metropolitan optical fiber to provide next-generation Ethernet-based broadband.

Initially, 15,000 existing residential customers in the apartments of the Helsinki Area Student Villages (HOAS) will be able to receive high speed Internet access via 10/100 Ethernet ports so that each user has an initial reserved capacity of 256 kbps. This initial network will provide a foundation to address Helsinki's increasing demand for high speed Internet access.

The Cisco technology will help provide Ethernet access through an optical fiber network running right to the basement of apartment blocks. Subscribers will be able to access the service using a simple Ethernet socket in the apartment together with a network card, which will eliminate the need for a modem.

Eagle Broadband Technology Center On Track for Service Startup
Eagle Broadband Inc., a supplier of broadband products, services and content, said its new Technology Center has completed its initial testing of streaming IP-based video over broadband fiber. Over the past few months, technicians at Eagle have successfully performed a series of tests over a combination of local area commercial broadband fiber networks and Eagle's own Metropolitan Area Network in the Greater Houston area.

Planning is now underway to conduct similar testing over a much longer commercial fiber path to fully demonstrate Eagle's capability to transmit full IP video to cities and municipalities outside of the immediate Texas area.
