Sprint, Nortel Ally
Sprint and Nortel Networks have entered into an alliance agreement to drive revenue through co-marketing and joint sales activities, combining Sprint's network and network management services with Nortel Networks voice and data expertise. Together, the two companies said they plan to deliver next generation telephony solutions to customers.

Sprint and Nortel Networks expect to jointly develop product solutions, sales opportunities and marrketing strategies across all Sprint business units worldwide. The alliance plans to leverage the Sprint frame relay network, which is standardized on Nortel Networks equipment. Key planned elements of the alliance include:

  • Network services and equipment sales: Sprint and Nortel Networks will join forces to deliver a wide range of equipment and services to customers including frame relay, optical, data and next generation telephony solutions. Sprint North Supply will distribute select Nortel Networks products to Sprint affiliates and North American customers.
  • Value-added service offerings: Sprint and Nortel Networks will develop a variety of value-added offerings, which may include managed solution bundles, optical solutions and professional consulting services. The alliance will leverage Nortel Networks sales force and MarketForce global co-marketing and business planning program to identify new revenue opportunities.

    Lucent Sells Plant to Solectron for $125M
    Slashing overhead, the telecom sells its North Andover, Mass., facility to the Milpitas, Calif., electronics maker and agrees to a 3-year supply contract. (more)

    Ikanos Closes Series C @ $35M
    Fremont, Calif.-based Ikanos Communications, a developer of broadband silicon chipsets, said it has received additional investments in its final round of Series C funding from strategic investors. In addition to Ikanos' existing investors there are two new participants in the latest round of its Series C funding; Presidio Venture Partners and Panasonic. Total Series C funding now stands at $35 million, and total funding secured to date is more than $52 million. Ikanos will use the new capital to continue to gain customer traction, particularly in the rapidly growing Asian broadband markets, where the company has already received an overwhelming response for its programmable chipsets.

    Previous Ikanos investors include Anthelion Capital, Greylock Partners, Intel Capital, JPMorgan Partners, Sequoia Capital, Ridgewood Capital, Telesoft Partners, VentureTech Alliance (an affiliate of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company--TSMC), and Walden International.

    Nortel Deploys in China
    Two major Chinese organizations, the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Statistics Administration of China, have deployed Nortel Networks metro networking solutions, equipping their data-reliant businesses for increasing information demands. Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5200 Multiservice Platform, which has been deployed by both institutes, is at the heart of the metro optical network linking the Shanghai Stock Exchange's three major business sites -- the Securities Exchange Building, the Waigaoqiao Communications Company and the Registration Company.

    NetPlane Rolls Out LMP Protocol Software
    NetPlane Systems, the protocol software business of Mindspeed Technologies, announced availability of the Link Management Protocol (LMP), a critical software communications component needed in the development of next generation optical network equipment. The only LMP implementation that incorporates the latest work by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) as well as the ITU-T, NetPlane's LMP is the newest addition to its industry leading MPLS software solution, LTCS. Available and shipping, pricing for LTCS-LMP begins at $75,000.

    Broadcom Intros New Controllers
    Broadcom Corp., a provider of integrated circuits enabling broadband communications, today announced the volume production availability of the industry's first family of 0.13-micron single-chip Gigabit Ethernet controllers with integrated 10/100/1000Base-T transceivers. The Broadcom third-generation NetXtreme product family, comprising the BCM5702, BCM5703 and BCM5703S, are said to significantly reduce the cost, board space, and power consumption required for Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. The new NetXtreme controllers have been sampling to strategic customers since November 2001, and several tier one system vendors have designs in process for use in a variety of desktop and mobile PCs, workstations and servers.

    Broadcom's new NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet controllers are currently sampling to strategic partners and are priced at $39 in sample quantities. The BCM5702 is currently in volume production. BCM5703 and BCM5703S production availability is planned for next calendar quarter.
